Mothers of the Bible

Updated: Apr 29

Happy Mother’s Day!

To all the moms

Like Eve, who brought the first children into the world with the hope, whose seed shall bruise (the serpent’s) head…(Genesis 3:15)

Like Sarah, by faith, also herself received strength to conceive seed, and was delivered of a child when she was past age, because she judged Him faithful who had promised (Hebrews 11:11)

Like Rebekah, and they blessed Rebekah, andsaid unto her, be thou the mother of millions, and let thy seed possess the gate of those which hate them. And Rebekah arose… (Genesis 24:60-61)

Like Leah and Rachel and their maidservants, Bilhah and Zilpah. Leah conceived and bare a son, and she called him Reuben, …Simeon,…Levi, …Judah. Bilhah conceived and bare a son… Dan, …Naphtali. Zilpah, Leah’s handmaid bare…Gad, …Asher. And Leah conceived (again) and bare Jacob the fifth son, Issachar. And Leah conceived again and …she called his name Zebulun. And God remembered Rachel … and she called his name Joseph, … and finally Benjamin. (Genesis 30, Genesis 35:18). Mothers of the tribes of Israel!

Like Deborah, a prophetess, wife of Lapidoth, she judged Israel at the time (Judges 4:4). And Deborah sang … “The inhabitants of the villages ceased, they ceased in Israel, until that I Deborah arose, that I arose a MOTHER in Israel (Judges 5:7). Awake, awake, Deborah, awake, awake, utter a song…. Under Deborah, the land of Israel had rest for forty years (Judges 5:31).

Like Esther, For if you altogether hold thy peace at this time, then shall there relief and deliverance arise to the Jews from another place; but you and thy father’s house shall be destroyed, and who knows whether YOU ARE COME TO THE KINGDOM FOR SUCH A TIME AS THIS? (Esther 4:14) … And so I will go unto the king, which is not according to the law, and if I perish, I perish. (Esther 4:16).

Like Ruth, who said, “Intreat me not to leave you (Naomi), or to return from following after thee, for wherever you go, I will go; and wherever you lodge, I will lodge. Your people (the House of Israel) will be my people, and your God (the God of Israel), my God (Ruth 1:16). She (a gentile outside of Israel) is grafted into the House of Israel through marriage to Boaz (her kinsman Redeemer). “And all the people that were in the gate, and the elders said, We are witnesses, the Lord make the woman that is come into thine house like Rachel and like Leah, which two did build the House of Israel, and do thou worthily in Ephratah, and be famous in Bethlehem. And let thy house be like the house of Pharez, whom Tamar bare unto Judah, of the seed which the Lord shall give thee of this young woman (Ruth 4:11-12).

Like Mary, And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary, for you have found favor with God. And behold, you shall conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shall call his name YESHUA (JESUS). … The Holy Spirit shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee; therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of you shall be called the Son of God. And Mary said “Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to Thy Word.” And the angel departed from her. (Luke 1).

Like the Samaritan woman who preached the gospel to the city of Samaria (John 4:3-43)…

Like the women, Mary Magdalene, Mary, Joanna, which preached the gospel first to the apostles (Luke 24:10)

And so many more! Happy Mother’s Day to those who raise their children to love the Lord God Almighty, who stand in faith even when the wait is long, who build the House of God, the House of Israel by knowing the Word of God in all its depth and beauty and being filled with God’s Holy Spirit, who teach, who preach, who prophesy, those who will stand up to power with Truth, who believe against all odds the promises of God are yes and amen, who preach the gospel wherever they go, who stand together with the strong men that will encourage and bless them in the work God’s children do together! Happy Mother’s Day to all of you brave, courageous moms who will not be silent when it is time to build and defend God’s Kingdom! Daughters of Jerusalem! Daughters of Zion! Daughter of Troops! (Micah 4:13 – Micah 5:1-2)
